Standard Wirehairs from Rose Farm

The third addition to the Rose Farm kennel was the Standard Wire variety which was started by Mrs. Nancy Onthank who bought the eight month old young sire, Pondwicks Hobgoblin, bred by Mrs. Elizabeth Medley, while in the UK and bringing him to the USA. Hobgoblin was started out by Frank and Dorothy Hardy, the professional handlers from Pennsylvania,  and then his show career was taken over by Dee Hutchinson. CH Pondwicks Hobgoblin ROMO became the All-Time Top-Producing Standard Wirehaired dog, having sired 90 American Champions including  many for Westphal, Solo Wires, Longdachs, Threesteps and Bobby Fowler’s None Such Kennel. As a producer of Champions, he became the Number One all time producer in a very short time since there were so many nice  bitches in the area to breed to him and help him produce the quality he was known for.

Hobgoblin’s show career consisted of one hundred entries in the BV class with a record of ninety-eight wins and that was, indeed, a remarkable record.

Although Rose Farms had few bitches to breed to Hobgoblin, they did manage to acquire a few of his kids to show, including these two local dogs, one of whom was WD twice at DALI which, at that time, was the largest Dachshund Show in the USA and the other bitch was WB/BW at DCA.

CH Radiance was a CH Vantebe’s Draht Timothy ROMO daughter from a Hobgoblin half-sister, CH Pondwicks Donna Elvira. Next came another Pondwicks import, CH Pondwicks Queen of Night ROMX, another Hobgoblin half-sister out of Hobgoblin;e dam, who finished quickly here in the states and, when bred to CH Westphal’s Timber W ROMX produced yet another DCA winner: CH Rose Farms Moon Rockette W ROM who was Best of Variety at the Houston DCA of 1973.

Lastly comes CH Rose Farm’s Calcide SW ROMX, the WD and BW at DCA 1994 and a very nice Special who was, in his on way, probably a little bit better than Hobgoblin, but, with the added strength in the Variety, he never made his mark as a sire as Hobgoblin did. I feel that he was stronger in neck and neckset and with a nicer body. He is a great one to leave the Rose Farm adventure in Standard Wires as he was an improvement over the great one (Hobgoblin) they started with and it is always nice to leave with better dogs than you had at the beginning, even though Hobgoblin was a pretty hard one to beat.

Remember this lineup and appreciate how, as a Dachshund breeder, one can start with the best and maintain that quality for so many years, keeping the conformation and temperament up and maintaining the stellar achievements that one has to have in the Breed.
