Here is a story on a big Dachshund winner of the late ’60s and his death. What happens then is a puzzlement to many of us , but this actually happened. Any questions will be answered at TDHP FB page.

George Spradling Talks about Conformation, Faults and Virtues

After George Spradling judged a nice entry at Beverly Hills KC in 1966, he was a guest at a dinner and talked about his favorite breed, the Dachshund. Mrs. Barbara Nichols recorded his remarks and after the discussion, Mr. Spradling read the transcript and gave it his approval.

He talks about conformation, faults and virtues, how they show up in the Dachshund ring and how we need to do something about the faults that recur in our breeding programs. He talks about looking for virtues, not faults; why the forequarters are much more important than the rear and why ‘square’ rears are not what the breed needs.

His points are easy to follow and we hope the article gives you some things to consider in your outlook on what to strive for in your breedings.

John Cook- A Remembrance

When we lose someone as great as John Cook, we really have to wonder about even discussing him, as each of his assignments were important to this Breed.  For a long time, his decisions maintained the look in the Breed to which many of us strove.  and his reasons for that look were what we are still trying to understand.

I, personally, always had a great relationship with Mr. Cook and we never had anything that came between us, even though he did not like all my dogs and his decisions often made that clear. We always talked Dachshunds and their history.  As you can see from the dogs he put up, he had one look that he preferred; he really tried to keep the long, low and level Dachshund with which most of us fell in love.

As friends, we kept our talks about other things and never talked about my dogs at all, but we did have great conversations about the Dachshund Breed in general, as well as Dachshund people. We were great friends, and I still miss him all the time.

Here is Mary Howell’s heartfelt goodbye to her friend and mentor, Ben Klimkiewicz. It touches on what he had in dogs and what he thought was important in breeding…and that, of course, meant FRONTS.

Read about his history in the Breed and how he and his smooth dogs helped Mary Howell get the fronts she so proudly showed in the ring.

Again, enjoy this slice of history and read it on TDHP website along with other material:

A Special Thank You!

AD_April_1972The team behind The Dachshund History Project wanted to take a few minutes to again thank Meg and Keith Williamson (Gemdach) for all the time, work and expense it took for them to donate years and years (many complete) of American Dachshund and Dachshund Variety magazines to the effort here at TDHP. While we have cobbled together our own collections, we didn’t come close to having such a complete compilation on our own. The American Dachshunds sent by the Williamson’s go all the way back to 1949! These magazine photos will help ensure that we have photos of old Dachshunds important to our breed, and perhaps even some photos that were otherwise lost to us. We firmly believe that by understanding our past, we are more able to improve our future.

If you have old photos or magazines you would like to donate or allow us to borrow (scan), please let us know what you have. Alternatively, you can scan things and email them to us, or if you don’t have the ability to scan, perhaps we can find someone in your area to assist.

We do appreciate monetary contributions, which allow us to forward-pay maintenance for the website in terms of hosting, the yearly domain fee, and donations for the themes and plugins we use, along with the occasional professional help for issues that are beyond our skill sets (it’s amazing how much goes into that effort). We also use monetary donations to selectively acquire items we think are unique and important to the history of the show Dachshund in the United States. Lastly, donations cover shipping costs for folks who want to donate things we are missing from the TDHP archives, but who cannot afford to ship from their own pocket. We are determined to preserve and display as much as possible for the Dachshund Fancy!

The article “Operation Favorite” from The American Dachshund was written by Lt Col Norton Parker.  The Lt Col tells of picking up Favorite from the Mehrer’s and bringing him to the Heying’s in California.  It is nicely written  and we have included photos of some of Favorite’s best Heying-Teckel offspring, too.

Please read it and look around our TDHP website and, if there are questions, please ask and we will try to answer.

Read “Operation Favorite” right here:

More on the Shultis Legacy

Sanford Roberts, Editor of “The American Dachshund in the later years of the magazine commented on Mr. Shultis after meeting him for the first time during  a DC of California show. He asked him a couple of questions and then was dumfounded by Mr Shultis’ response.

Look at Mr. Shultis’ dogs and compare them to Mr Roberts dog and then , I believe, you can see what Mr Shultis meant and where Mr Robert’s dog failed in what the Gera owners bred and concentrated on. Look at their fronts and then look at the Robdachs dog.

We have been working a long time on this project, but here, at last, is the story of CH Moffett’s Rosanne ROMO and her seventeen Champion offspring. There are many pictures here and sixteen are pictured along with Rosanne’s parents and grandparents.

We hope you see the difference when specific dogs are added to the gene pool and see what differences they can make.

Please read about them here:
