Adding dogs with some health problems behind it

After being asked about adding dogs with some serious health problems into their bloodlines and so I would give you my thoughts about my thinking and what I did about getting rid of them before the Boondox line was considered full of diseases that could end the type that I wanted to present. First, the two problems we had when I was breeding a lot was epilepsy and disc disease and, at that time, there were no tests that showed if dogs carried these diseases and so I had to look around and see what could be done in using some of their offspring in my breeding program. Now, the ones I wanted to use were dogs that could help my line of dogs and had the type and star quality that I always had to add to my line. I did NOT breed to lesser dogs, but picked out stellar dogs that helped my Boondox dogs be better Dachshunds. Again, these were my rules were for breeding the best to the best, never to breed to a lesser dog.

My first Smooth bitch had produced a Group and multiple Specialty winner and I was thinking of breeding her again, but she came down with epilepsy and I soon lost her. I was heartbroken and soon found out that many of her line carried the disease and most breeders knew it. I determined then that I would never breed to anything that had epilepsy behind them as there were no tests that said they had the disease coming. I never bred the daughter any more and basically just shut that line down. I was careful and never did have the disease again. There still is no test for epilepsy in Dachshunds and I did not want to spread that loss to new pet owners.

My other problem was disc disease and that one gave me problems, because my favorite, CH Delldachs Rolls Royce ROMX, went down and my other pick was CH Von Dyck’s Mr Bojangles L ROMO who also was lost due to back problems. In studying the disease, disc problems usually showed up before the animal was five years old and, if they were safe after five, they were probably not carrying disc disease and so I might take my chances and use the great ones coming down from those two as they were really part of the top of the line of Standard Longhairs.

First, I had all of Hannelore’s dogs to use and found two greats to use, CH B’s Javelin de Bayard ROMO and CH Gerolf das Zwerglein L ROMO, but, when looking around, the fabulous CH Han-Jo’s Xtra Copy L ROMO sort of jumped out and caught my eye. Lorene Hogan started showing him and brought him to the bigger shows and I loved his style, his great temperament and that great coat, BUT he was sired by Mr Bojangles and he was still ony three years old. Knowing the fact that most disc disease showed up by the offspring was five years ols, I gave him another year and then I sent one of my greats, CH Boondox Emma v Walmar ROMO, to him, got my beautiful All Champion litter from her and, first and foremost, her great son, CH Boondox Panama Jack ROMO was Xtra Copy’s legacy to us. Again, no disc disease ever showed up from that litter and I was glad I took the chance and bred to Bojangle’s son, ‘Xtra Copy L ROMO. It was worth it.

When seeing Hannelore show CH Bayard le Fantome, bred by Mary Howell and owned by Arnett and Orville Wright, I immediately fell in love with him and then, after seeing his pedigree with two crosses back to Rolls Royce there, thought that I shouldn’t do it. However, I did love that dog, noted that he was past five years old, and said why not take a chance and so sent my CH Boondox Emma v Walmar ROMO to be bred to him. She had a great litter and  again no disc disease ever showed up. I kept CH Boondox Quicksilver L ROMX who when bred to PJ was a top producer, again.

From Emma, I got so many great dogs that really changed the way the Boondox line worked and, after me not ever using any of my dogs that I bred and raised here at stud, I started using PJ and that one opened the floodgates as I then started using other great ones I had here and there. I hate to say it, but using these dogs (Fantome and Xtra Copy) changed my outlook in the Breed and made me have even better dogs and they NEVER gave me disc disease in my line at all.

This is my take on whether to use a dog with epilepsy behind it ( I never did) or with dogs down from disc disease ( I did after the dogs were past five years of age). This is not ‘scientific’ but it is what I used when I was doing all my breeding and, to me, it was quite successful in getting my Boondox line better and that is what I was really attempting to do in trying these things. I just am pointing it out to show you what I did and why I did it.
