The Boondox “E” Litter

Lardi ROMO and her ‘owner’ Melanie Maurey,co-breeder of Chaps

About 15 months after my “D” litter, I decided to breed Lardi (Rose Farms Black Berry Buff  L ROMO) to another dog after her two litters of Javelin ROMO puppies who were kind of succesful in the show Ring. I did not have a Longhair Stud dog here at Boondox and, in fact, would not keep a Dachshund male to breed to until ’85, as I always thought that great Dachshund bitches were what produces that next generation which I would be showing. I loved the great structure and strong temperaments that I got from Javelin ROMO and was wanting to find some of the same things when I bred Lardi this time. That front that I had in my top dogs and bitches was one thing I could not lose and so I soon decided to use either CH Han-Jo’s Ulyssis L ROMO or Hannelore’s younger Special, CH Gerolf das Zwerglein L ROMO. Ulyssis is already behind both of my foundation Longhair bitches, Lardi, and her niece, Pammy (CH Rose Farms Country Girl L ROMX). I decided that while I loved Ulyssis ROMO and what he had already produced, I decided that, while I liked the Java offspring I had already, I did love Gerolf a whole lot and thought that I could cross the Gerolf and Java puppies to each other and, perhaps, get even better ones down the road. After I used Gerolf, I saw that he did produce that oval-chested look that really demanded attention from the Judges and, when bred to the Javelin puppies who had  that beautiful angulation, neckset and topline, I got that structure that I loved doubled up on and, as far as losing it, I just always bred to great-fronted dogs that always produced it. When the offspring of these Gerolf daughters hit the Show Ring, they really took it by storm as these puppies really had everything I wanted to have at the early stages of my Boondox line.

I let Wally and Mary Jones of Walmar raise these Lardi puppies as I had already said that I would drive Hannelore and Joe Heller to Houston for that DCA  and, since the Jones and I were always backers of Hannelore, Wally and Mary Jones would whelp and raise the litter.  When I got home and saw the puppies, my head spun around as there were really some show stoppers in there and I could not have been more thrilled with the way that Lardi produced again in being bred to another great Dachshund.

Anyway, the litter consisted of two dogs and four bitches and, after watching them at home for a few weeks, I kept  back two bitches and the two dogs and placed the other two bitches with Dee Hutchinson. I met Dee at a show and gave both bitches to her and, when she put them in a pen, they both started fighting and Dee picked them up and said, since they hate each other, this one is “Jerry” and this one is “Ramona”. ( I guess this was an age-old feud about Jerry Cross and Ramona Van Court hating each other. LOL)

CH Rose Farms Jerry v Boondox as a Veteran

At that time, Dee had lots of young Longhairs and so placed CH Rose Farms Jerry v Boonodx L with her Kennel helper, Andra O’Connel who finished her  and bred her once to Sidney’s dog, CH Solong Squire v Bristleknoll ROMO, and she produced CH Amtekel’s The Great Gatsby L CD ROM who, when owned and shown by Sidney Stafford, became the ’89 DCA National Specialty BV and BB winner! Rose Farms Romona v Boondox , the other bitch Gerolf/lardi bitch Dee had, was placed with Ginny Seavey from New England where she won 14 points toward her AKC Championship, but did not finish.

That left the two dogs that I did not feel like were up to the two bitches that I had here and so I sold them to pet homes where they lived long lives and both owners came back for more pets later. So I had the two bitches left and I thought they were both top quality and, in fact, two of the best bitches I had raised so far. I had had many good ones the first few years and had Anka and Dolly who were both top quality longhairs, but I felt that both of these were even better than Anka and Dolly, one Smooth and one Longhair.

CH Rose Farms Elite v Boondox ROMX

The top quality was the black and tan, CH Rose Farms Elite v Boondox L ROMX, who I felt was the best one I had ever raised as she literally stole all my attention and demanded that we all just stop and look at her every time we saw them out and showing off. She was one who looked like a little Show Dog when she started walking and never let us forget she was going to be a star. I gave her to my other great friends, Dr Asa and Karen Mays, who were living in Bloomington , IN and who had been showing Salukis, Borzoi and Beagles for a few years. I often travelled to shows with them and joined BIKC at that time. Anyway, that Fall, Dr Mays accepted a new job and moved to NJ and was waiting for Karen to sell the house when they would be together. When they were about nine months old, DCA was being held in Washington DC and so I took her out there and she was entered for the first time. Asa showed her and she won 5 points at the Host Specialty under Dachshund Authotity Robin Hernandez! We were thrilled but then we saw she was under 9 months old and she lost the points! What a loss that was. The next day, Mrs Potter Wear was judging at the other Host Show and she placed her WB again! We were thrilled, but Dee was still in the Ring and said everyone still show as she was going to lose her points again . The next day she was in the right class for DCA but lost to her sister Emma. After the show, many people asked how mad I was after Elite’s two 5 point majors were taken away and I just laughed and said it doesnt bother me as I get to show her in the classes longer I finished her qiockly in te States and then she moved to te East Coast with the Mays family and was BOSV winner at Knickerbocker before she was sent back to Boondox. I had been thinking about where to breed her until Ruth Martucci kept begging me for a great B&T bitch and so I sold her to Ruth Martucci and the Lostdog Kennel as I already co-owned Emma with Mr Hartkemeier from Cincinnati.

CH Boonodx Emma v Walmar L ROMO

Finally, here at the end was the real game changer that really changed the look of Standard Longhair Dachshunds in the US. The last one left here was CH Boondox Emma v Walmar ROMO who took off winning after Elite was finished and she started going up over the Specials a lot of the time. She came along while I was reading Jane Austen and she did become Emma because of Austen’s novel, Emma, as well as for Mrs Nance from Ohio and also Patt’s mother. I did sell her on a co-wnership to Robert Hartkemeier who already bought a pet from me, but wanted to own a couple of good ones that could live at my place. Little did he know what he lucked into. Again, she was a very nice bitch, but not quite as as good as Elite in the Show Ring, but, as a producer, she was even better than I could have even imagined. I bred her a few times, but, as you can imagine I was very careful about who I bred her to. The first Dachshund was CH Han-Jo’s ‘Xtra Copy L ROMO who really hit it off with Emma and they produced a litter of four puppies and soon they all became AKC Champions: CH Boondox Panama Jack ROMO (All Time Top Producing sire of Standard Longhair Dachshunds and first Dachshund to sire over 100 Champions), CH Boondox Pumpkin L ROMX (Wally and Mary Jones Great Producer), CH Boondox Pandemonium ROMX (Sidney Stafford’s great Brood Bitch) and CH Boondox Promise. Bred to Dual CH Lostdog’s Black Bart L ROMO, she produced CH Boondox Yorktown L ROMX and, bred to CH Bayard le Fantome, she produced CH Boondox Quicksilver L ROMX. She produced so much better than she was and she was pretty darned good herself!
